Government Canyon State Natural Area offers more than 40 miles of trails. You can also camp, attend a program or guided hike, geocache, picnic, take nature photos, and look for birds and other wildlife. Your kids will connect with “natural fun” at our playscape and Discovery Trail.
The natural area is open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays.
Hiking/biking trails
Take a walk through time on the Joe Johnston Route to the Zizelmann House, built in the 1880s. You’ll pass 110-million-year-old dinosaur tracks and a prehistoric midden (look for a sign with information on this Native American site).
For great views, hike the Far Reaches Trail to the Chula Vista and Sotol overlooks, or to the North and South Bluff Spurs overlooks.
Camping
Reserve one of 23 walk-in tent campsites. We also have two walk-in group tent camps for up to 16 people.

Helotes, whose name is derived from the Spanish word elotes or “corn,” has been on Texas maps since the nineteenth century. Once inhabited by Lipan Apaches, Tonkawas, and Comanches, the City originally served as a stagecoach stop between San Antonio and Bandera.
For decades, Helotes remained a farming community. The opening of the famous John T. Floore County Store in 1946 marked a turn towards commerce and economic growth. The dance hall is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a Texas Historic Landmark that draws top musical talent to its stages.

Casa Helotes is a senior citizen activity center serving the City of Helotes, northwest San Antonio and surrounding communities. Casa Helotes is classified as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with three purposes:
Provide a safe environment where seniors can gather for fellowship, games and activities.
Provide information and/or access to various services pertinent to seniors.
Serve congregate meals Monday through Friday to seniors (60 years and older) under a contract with the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG).
Casa Helotes was founded in 1986 by a small group of women in Sigma Pi chapter of ESA International, who previously prepared and delivered meals to seniors on their own. As the demands for meals increased, the group envisioned having a central location to prepare and serve hot meals to senior citizens as well as providing a safe gathering place to allow senior citizens the opportunity to stay engaged in their community. Initially, the group obtained funding for the current facility and equipment through AACOG, private donations and fundraising activities.
To this day, Casa Helotes remains active in fulfilling its original goals. Currently, the center serves an average of 200 congregate meals weekly and offers a variety of educational seminars and fitness activities for all seniors to enjoy.

Government Canyon State Natural Area offers more than 40 miles of trails. You can also camp, attend a program or guided hike, geocache, picnic, take nature photos, and look for birds and other wildlife. Your kids will connect with “natural fun” at our playscape and Discovery Trail.
The natural area is open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays.
Hiking/biking trails
Take a walk through time on the Joe Johnston Route to the Zizelmann House, built in the 1880s. You’ll pass 110-million-year-old dinosaur tracks and a prehistoric midden (look for a sign with information on this Native American site).
For great views, hike the Far Reaches Trail to the Chula Vista and Sotol overlooks, or to the North and South Bluff Spurs overlooks.
Camping
Reserve one of 23 walk-in tent campsites. We also have two walk-in group tent camps for up to 16 people.
Campgrounds are open Friday and Saturday nights only. We open for additional nights around holidays; visit our Events page for those dates.

Surrounded by the beauty of the Texas Hill County, located just northwest of San Antonio, Helotes was incorporated in 1981 as a Type A General Law City. Helotes, whose name is derived from the Spanish word elotes or “corn,” has been on Texas maps since the nineteenth century. Once inhabited by Lipan Apaches, Tonkawas, and Comanches, the City originally served as a stagecoach stop between San Antonio and Bandera.
For decades, Helotes remained a farming community. The opening of the famous John T. Floore County Store in 1946 marked a turn towards commerce and economic growth. The dance hall is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a Texas Historic Landmark that draws top musical talent to its stages.
Today, the City of Helotes is a unique community that maintains its small-town tranquility and family-oriented activities. Citizens remain committed to economic prosperity while balancing environmental consciousness and historic preservation with modern revitalization.

Casa Helotes is a senior citizen activity center serving the City of Helotes, northwest San Antonio and surrounding communities. Casa Helotes is classified as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with three purposes:
Provide a safe environment where seniors can gather for fellowship, games and activities.
Provide information and/or access to various services pertinent to seniors.
Serve congregate meals Monday through Friday to seniors (60 years and older) under a contract with the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG).
Casa Helotes was founded in 1986 by a small group of women in Sigma Pi chapter of ESA International, who previously prepared and delivered meals to seniors on their own. As the demands for meals increased, the group envisioned having a central location to prepare and serve hot meals to senior citizens as well as providing a safe gathering place to allow senior citizens the opportunity to stay engaged in their community. Initially, the group obtained funding for the current facility and equipment through AACOG, private donations and fundraising activities.
To this day, Casa Helotes remains active in fulfilling its original goals. Currently, the center serves an average of 200 congregate meals weekly and offers a variety of educational seminars and fitness activities for all seniors to enjoy.
